MARCH 21, 2007

JUDGE MARY MURPHY ANNOUNCED HER CANDIDACY FOR THE SEAT JUSTICE MARK WHITTINGTON WILL LEAVE ON THE COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FIFTH DISTRICT AT DALLAS

On March 21, 2007, Justice Mark Whittington announced that he will not seek re-election to the Court of Appeals for the Fifth District of Texas at Dallas. On the same day, Judge Mary Murphy announced her candidacy for election to Justice Whittington's seat. Mary is ready for this challenge and she would be honored to continue her service on the Court of Appeals.

AFTER 35 YEARS IN THE LEGAL COMMUNITY, MARY IS READY TO SERVE IN THE COURT OF APPEALS

In the past 35 years, Mary has served as a word processor in a law firm, a legal secretary, a paralegal, a law clerk, an associate attorney, a partner at a major firm, a partner at a small firm, as a court master, and as a district court judge. The next step in her legal career would be as one of the 13 justices on the Court of Appeals, and she is ready to serve.

MARY'S BACKGROUND, INCLUDING SUPREME COURT AND REGIONAL APPOINTMENTS TO COMPLEX LITIGATION, QUALIFY HER FOR SERVICE IN OUR COURT OF APPEALS
Mary's background in virtually every aspect of the legal profession has prepared her for this position. As a litigator, she handled her own appeals from trial court decisions. Her writing background began in undergraduate school as an English major (if you ignore her 5th grade poetry), and she continued her legal writing and analysis through law school and practice. Her experience includes complex litigation and hundreds of papers on legal topics. She has been appointed both by the Supreme Court MDL Panel and by the Region I Presiding Administrative Judge to serve as the pretrial judge in complex litigation in Texas. As a district court judge, she has presided over 1,000 motions and more than 200 trials, which matters may be appealed directly to the Court of Appeals.

JUDGE MURPHY HONORS JUDICIAL RESTRAINT AND INDEPENDENCE OF THE JUDICIARY

Mary's judicial philosophy is one of judicial restraint with respect for the independence of the judiciary. The most recent Bar evaluations, in which an 80% approval rating is considered high, graded her performance with the following approval: 97% for hard working, 92% for impartiality, 91% for knowledge of the law, 93% for proper judicial demeanor, and an overall 91% approval rating. For the past seven plus years, the 14th District Court in which Judge Murphy presides has consistently disposed of cases, giving it (with the exception of 5 months) the lowest case count for any civil district court. Mary promises to bring these same standards of fairness, hard work, and independence of the judiciary to the Court of Appeals.

MARY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT IN THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION

The Election is November 4, 2008. Mary needs your support in that election and will continue to work hard to maintain the integrity of the judiciary. Please help in whatever way you can. Mary will never take for granted your support or her obligations to the judiciary.
